I just read this morning that toyota outsold GM in the first quarter. I'm not a GM fan, but I hate to see this. Its a sad day for the domestic car companys.

It's GMs own damn fault, if they and the other "domestic' auto makers would build a car the public wants instead of forcing all of these damn SUV type vehicles on us it would be a different story.

Take a look at our a-bodies, they are cheap but cool no frills cars. They, being Mopar, needs to make a cheap no frills car that can have a small motor (neon engine) for mileage and a big motor (hemi) option for the people that want power. The Neon engine has way more power than the /6 and would get over double the mileage of the /6. The car needs to be light also, no power options, manual everthing. If you want a fully loaded car go buy a 300 or something.

Your right thought like most industries we invented we let someone else eventually dominate it because of our own stupidity and it is a sad day.

Its all about quality... I cant tell you how many times someone ask " You had to put a new transmission in that truck yet? " When I tell them I drive a Dodge... Why do they sit back and replace four million transmissions or other parts before saying " Ya know something? we may have a problem! " ?? Everyone will tell you " You can put 300'000 mile on a Toyota with no problems. " It does not take a genius to figure out they where heading to the top... Yes it sucks!!!!

I have found that people actually treat their Toyota or Honda better that is why the longevity. I worked at a Honda dealer as a mechanic for 5 years and can tell you that the cars that people always brought in and took care of lasted much longer than the ones that people only brought in when something happened. This was few and far between but I actually had to replace a motor in a Honda at 30,000 miles. Not because of poor quality but because of lack of oil changes. Customer care is the single biggest thing that effects the longevity of a vehicle, this more times than not gets blamed for poor vehicle quality. I have seen it many times.

I worked as a service writer at a toyota dealership. I think the gap is quite narrow between imports & domestics in quaility. We had our share of buy back camrys, nick pick problems, head gskt problems (3.4). Like when the sienna mini-van came out, they all would make a right hand turn, we had our fair share of problems with the tundra also. One thing about import customers, they maintenace their cars. When the domestic customer runs out of warranty, they quite bringing it back to the srvice dept. The import mfg will take better care of the customer than the domestics. I have bought a few new Dodge trucks & cars in the last 20 years, all have been great vehicles. What the public don't see is the common problems & recalls with imports, that bit of news never makes the evening broadcast. If its a domestic, its headline news! I really don't agree with the quality arqument, but I do think the service is better with the dealer & mfg. Import owners are a loyal bunch, even when they build a bad car, no one seems to complain. It doesn't seem to be so with domestic owners.
