I am starting to restore the glove box door. It appears that someone else has tried this. On the metalized plastic, someone has oversprayed some black on it.

Does anyone know any way to remove the black from the plastic without harming the plastic itself, thus keeping its shine?

I had some luck using 2000 grit sandpaper and lightly sanding off the paint under a stream of water. Then I used headlight restoration compound to buff a nice shine out of it. Take your tome and just make sure whatever plastic pieces you want to sand are in fact molded in their final color and not just painted.

if you want to remove paint from plastic surfaces the best way i have found is to soak the piece in brake fluid. hope this helps you

Easy-Off oven cleaner also seems to work well.

this works pretty good and you have less chance of ruining any other parts

I stripped a number of layers of paint from a C-Body bezel with Lift Off. Found it at Lowe's or Home Depot. Stuff is water based and won't leave oil residue behind.
