When engine is running and transmission is in park there is a grinding noise.
With engine not running and put it in neutral and start engine the grinding noise is gone.
Suggestions??

Like maybe one of the bolts has come loose?
I suppose I could remove inspection cover and check.
Look over the flex plate carefully too. You really can see where it bolts to the crankshaft. if the potside bolts are tight and the plate isn't cracked where it bolts to the converter lugs, Upi can start it up and listen for the noise in park. Safety first. On a hoist at a shop or on heavy jack stands with the wheels blocked.

Thank you for all the advice and a good place to start! I'll keep you updated...will be looking into it tomorrow after work

In Neutral, the trans is 'loaded', just like it is in gear. If this is a bolt/clearance issue, I would expect grinding when in N. Since it only grinds in Park, that suggests to me that it is parking pawl related.
