Grudge match HELP!

Here's the story......My boss and I have been talking junk since last summer on who would win heads up 1/8 mile. We both had motors built at the same time, for our street cars. He had a late model low compression 360 and I a '70 340. Both used the same cam, both balanced and blueprinted. But he did install a set of heads that had been worked over for a stocker motor that he ran for a while, but changed the valve springs. I just had a stock set of "X" heads that had valve job and new springs. He is running Hooker headers and i am running Spitfires. His motor is in a '73 Duster with 904, 8 1/4 rear 3:23 posi. Mine is in my '66 Valiant with 904, 8 3/4 3:91 posi. Both running Mopar electronic ignition.
Because of schedules and such we have never got to the track at the same time. The best time I ran was 9:10 in 90 degree heat. I find out in early Oct. he ran 8:85. Pissed me off! He doesn't know, that I know, what he knows. He is running a dot drag radial. But my car hooked well on my street tire. Don't think I am losing to much there. But I need to find out his 60 ft time.
So in lies my dilemma. Should I put MSD ignition and maybe the MSD distributor in this thing or just get the dot drag radial? Maybe put some 110 octane in the thing.

What are you running for intake and carb. Yes to the drag tires, with the 3.91and street tires you were probably spinning coming of the line maybe not much but any is to much.
 
The temperature will make a difference on how the cars performed. In October he had a cooler day than you. That little bit of difference in time would be more than made up for if you ran at the same temperature. If you have any wheel spin at all get the drag radials. All things being the same your lower gears will help you to overcome the flowed heads. Run him heads up. Good Luck
 
I would go with traction and tuning. Nice Valiant btw.
 
Cheap and easy traction help is street slick and then pinion snubber set at 1/2" from body and clamp springs ahead of axle. That will give biggest help at lower cost.
 
Dusters by the way mother Mopar made them have more weight on the rear wheels.
With his having drag radials?????
You need more gear and traction to beat him.
Your motor sounds like it is stronger, what are your 60 ft times?
RPM at the traps.
Your car has a 8.75 so find a set of 4.30 or 4.56 gears, drag radials and I think you will have bragging rights.
If he dont have a 4" arm in that motor he is not telling you about.
 
higher octane will not help if motors not built for it. octane slows flame travel to prevent detonation,something you dont want. 26 inch stickys would work well with around 15 lbs of air in them.Disconnect your vacuumn advance and run about 36 to 38 degrees total timing with some good 93 pump swill.
 
Isn't that something. Can't remember what freakin' intake i'm running. The car is covered in the garage. I think its a Edelbrock torker 340 with a 750 holley vac. sec. with a light spring. As for my 60 ft time it was a 2:23. Not running vac adv. already totalled.

Your 60fts. suck with those gears, it should do better then that with 3.91s, you must be spinning or the tune is off.
 
Firstoff beautiful car...first thing i'd do is get yourself some m/t drag radials and a set of 3.91 gears..you could go nitrous but then again ANYBODY can do that, big deal...beating someone n/a is far more rewarding...
 
MSD won't make any HP, unless your ignition is very week or erratic. if your using the stock avs that might slow you down.
 
barrow a set of 456 or488s put sum tires on it (hosiers) and hang on shift it around 6500 you will be looking in the mirror at him.........Artie:evil4::evil4:
 
To be fast all the way down the track I agree with a tire change :study:
that first 100 feet is very important as I am sure you know :iconbigg:
As daredevil said some 26 inch stickys would work well with around 15 lbs of air in them to get you off the line :burnout:
you are giving him about 15 hp by running a 8 3/4 verses am 8 1/4.
Anticipate the last light going out and do not wait on the green :iconbigg:
Have you ever chilled your gas ? easy to do and a cheep fix and you can remove the chiller "home made can" after the day is over
I know from experience that this alone will give you 3 ta 4 tenths :bom:

Yep!!! definitely barrow a pair of tires and jack the front tire pressure up or borrow some skinniest set for the front.

Opps,thought the other guy had the 3.91's..well then drag radials it is.and if he doesn't already have one a manual valvebody would be nice,and some drag shocks will help it to hook..
 
Thanks for the compliments and advice. I think its time for some drag radials. So now I need to get a set of 15" sbp wheels so i can get a decent size drag radial.

Losing some weight off the nose will help your launch.
