I have a 71' Duster that originally had a slant six. I now have a 318, but the original power steering pump bracket won't work on the V8. Can I rob some brackets off of any 318? Or, do I have to have brackets that are pump specific? I'm thinking in 72' or 73' they went to a different bracket system on the power steering pump, since on the 71' it won't work, yet on my buddie's 73', he was able to bolt his pump right up to the v8.

Raid all the OE parts to the engine!

Brackets are specific to pumps. The early or at least 2nd gen A`s I believe came with TRW-Thompson, what I have. then there is Federals, look simular but are different with diff. brackets. then Saganaw with different brackets. The V8s got a larger cu-in. pump verses /6. I ran across a website that sold new repro brackets but I cant remember who. If I saved it I`ll post who. Hope this helps8)

Here are the pics... I didn't realize how dirty the pump is.. jeez, this makes me look bad, haha....

This would seem to be your options, If it were me, I`d search your local yards, or ask on FABO for PS brackets for your year engine, maybe they`ll have a good pump too. Or if your a slick fabricator, make your own. Pumps can be had at your local parts house, fat chance on brackets, and some dont even give you resivoir or pullys. Some do. Search Jims`s auto parts, he shows you the lowdown on pumps and brackets, but very salty. This should get you moving in the right direction. 8)

You have to change your pulley to a V8 pulley as well as your brackets.

It would be much easier to get a complete junkyard V8 setup.

V8 Diplomats/ Aspens, etc are bolt-in. They only came with Saginaw pumps.

So, can you tell by the pics on what setup I have? So, I'm better off going to the junker and getting the pump and brackets..... Does it matter which pump I pick up? Can I grab a pump and pulley off of a 78' pickup?

I'm really bummed right now, because in my buddy's 73' dart his pump bolted right up.... well, i think he had to shim the brackets, but still.......

Check these old posts out. I think they may help you.

Federal Pump

It shows how the /6 pulley sticks out farther than the V8 one.

So, I have the round tube pump. that means I have the federal pump, right? But it sounds like my pulley is too large, so I'd be better off getting the brackets AND pump from the junkyard, right?

Here's an update for you guys:

Went to the local junkyard, where I picked up my pulley's a month or two ago... Got the pump and all the brackets for 27 bucks... hopefully the pump works... haha.. I pulled this off a early 80's pickup with a 318.. same exact truck I got the pulley's from...

I'll get it cleaned up tonight and possibly painted..

I may be crazy, but is one line low pressure and the other line high pressure? I'm noticing on both vehicles that one line has pressed fittings, while the other just has clamps holding it on....

I got the pump all cleaned up and painted, as well as the brackets....

For an update (not that anyone cares) here is the cleaned up pump vs. the old pump I pulled out....

I know this car won't be a show winner, but at least it will look better than it did before...

There is a hydraulic shop a couple of blocks away.. I think I'll just have them make me a new high pressure hose....

Is that a Saginaw pump?

Good idea getting a new hydraulic line made up. And yes one is hi pressure and the other a return low psi.

that original pump is kinda hard to find v-8 brackets for. atleast i usually don't see them around. also that pump i have only seen on a-bodies up to 72. after that they went to the new one you have. notice where that high pressure line in on your old pump. on the saginaw like you just got the high pressure line is on the back of the pump and will hit the motor mount on 72-down k-frames. i found out the hard way years ago...lol

Thanks for all the help on this one, guys.... hopefully I'll have pics posted soon... I just got my alternator as well, so I should have the front end all bolted up soon...
