i HAVE A 360 WITH ELECTRONIC IGNITION. THE PROBLEM I HAVE IS THE MOTOR IS HARD TO START. BUT IF I RUN A JUMPER WIRE ACROSS THE BALLAST IT STARTS AND RUNS FINE. I DONT THINK THAT I HAVE A BAD BALLAST. :sad1: I THINK I HAVE VOLTAGE REGULATOR PROBLEM CAN SOMEONE THAT KNOWS ABOUT THIS HELP.

I don't think it's your Voltage Reg. With a meter you should have 1.2 Ohms resistance over your resister. Although it may look good, get it checked, their could be cracks ect which have increased the resistance to start correctly...that's why when you jumped it, it started no problem...Also, while jumping it, don't leave that jumper on very long, it's only used for the "start" not "run" circuit as it delivers power straight to the coil in the start position.

A bad Voltage Reg may allow your alt to over charge your battery...are you having battery problems?

You should also check cranking voltage. You should have tjhe same "cranking voltage" @ the power wire feeding the coil. The second you let off the key and it goes to the "run position" it then is fed via the ballast resistor. I believe that on the starter relay is where the cranking voltage is applied to the coil while cranking.

Me hating the bulkhead idea, I would take the plugs out of the firewall and clean the heck out of them, ballast, ecu, alternator and voltage regulator. Make sure it's all clean, and tight. You can also give straight battery 12v to 'in' of the resistor and if it fires, you likely have a draw somewhere between the battery/firewall/ignition/firewall/ballast

I Checked Volts Coming In To Ballast 1have 12 Volts When Cranking Overr And 12 Volts Exiting The Ballast. I Still Have The Point Type Voltage Regulator . I Think I Read Somewhere That I Need A Electronic Ignition Voltage Regulator. I May Be Wrong But I Am Still Stumped.

When you tried it today and you had 12v. to the ballast resistor on both sides did it want to start? Did you try jumping across the resistor again and did it start? Rarely when cranking an engine over will you get 12v. as the starter draw will pull the voltage to under 12v.
Again, hook volt meter to + side of the coil and check voltage while cranking the engine for about 5-10 seconds. What does it read? Does the voltage vary while it's cranking? Can you tell if there is any spark coming from the coil? Any new parts installed recently? Has the gasoline been in the car a long time?

When I Check Voltages At Ballast With Just Key On I Have 12 Volt For A Few Seconds Then It Starts To Drop. Butwhen I Start Cranking The Motor It Jumps To Between 10 And 11.5 Volts. On The Out Put Side.the Input Side Has Constant 12 Volts. I Beleive This Is How It Should Work. But Will Barely Start. When I Put Jumper Wire On It Fires Right Away. Very Frusturating.(i Cant Run A Jumper All The Time To Start My Car) HAVE LOW VOLTAGE AT COIL UNTIL I USE JUMPER. THEN HAVE BETWEEN 10 AND 11 VOLTS. HAS BEEN LIKE THIS FOR A WHILE HAVENT CHANGED ANYTHING. GETTING PLENTY OF FRESH GAS (NOT OLD). :banghead: :banghead:
