Hard to have a nice yard, when neighbors have a Dandelion Nursery!

-
My wife wants crushed granite with borders and cactus and other drought resistant plants. I'm all for that if it doesn't need piped in water.
We do " Zero " scape, or "Eco" scape down here. Basically, anything that'll grow on its own in the heat.. some of its colorful, some is palm type, but it's cool, I reckon

Tried it. You will get rid of dandelions, but the Scotts Program does not touch Crabgrass, clover, nut grass, spurge, and a lot of other common weeds. Plus, their crabgrass preventer does not lay down a barrier that lasts all season. I am not a Scotts fan.
Nut grass is a problem with my lawn, a real PIA . Im also not a Scott's fan.

Imagine a sea spider but it's a weed. It grows about 1/2 inch up then makes a 90 and then grows out in every direction. It'll get about 36" in diameter and you just get a shovel under it and find its center, then you pop it up ( maybe 6" single root) and throw it away. The other spreading plant like this one has a red rubbery flower like a succulent and is the same growth pattern, find the center and pop it out. Kinda like a red/purple rhubarb branch.

Sounds like purslane. Hard to eradicate, but relatively easy to control. It likes poor soils, fix the soil and other stuff will crowd it out.
Don't let it get big or get to the flowering stage, its a prolific seed producer. Goes great in salads though, and makes a great compost additive (until it flowers). We find it's a good mulch in the garden and just let it spread. It's resilient to being walked on and keeps the soil moist beneath. It's not a heavy feeder, and helps to break up hard soils.
We've noticed that tends to thin out or disappear once the soil improves and other plants or mosses take hold. Purslane doesn't like a lot of competition, and is easily shaded out by taller plants.
Amend with compost and organic matter, and do a soil test to help figure out what your ground lacks. Compost and mulch will go a long way to helping grass seed take hold.

anybody use those mechanical dandelion popper's, yea they are a little bit of work but i've never known of anybody catching cancer or parkinson's from work

Yes, that's the succulent looking thing I find! Maybe well eat it.

I bought a weed puller you stick in the ground and a lever you step on. Works pretty good, better in early spring when the roots haven't taken yet.
Edit*** Fiskars is the make

Some of us have lernt through exerience that it isnt worth it to have a nice yard. On the other hand if it is a necessity then you have to buy enough land where your neighbors are so far away that you cannot see them...I've given up being at war with neighbors years ago, and I quit talking to the one guy last July...its great I ignore him to his face every time I see him. That simpleton went too far but that's a long story...

We have what is called”landscapers” here. They take care of yards get rid of weeds fertilize pick up sticks and actually make lawns beautiful. All you have to do is send them a check every month and your neighbors lawn will be”lawn of the month”! You will love the results!!!!

I’m glad I live in the country and don’t have to worry about the little stuff in life. Lol.
So am I fella, but I still look after mine.

That said, maybe the poor smuck across the street doesn't have time for his lawn or isn't able. We don't know the entire story. Back in the late '80's when I was working 19 to 20 hours per day at our plastics plant all I had to do was leave a jug of Kilex out in front of our garage and my old neighbour did 4 of our lawns.... so he didn't have to see a dandelion !

i try to keep mine neatly cut and trimmed but if it’s that or going racing or fishing my grass will wait. My hillside and Pa weather makes mine a little harder to keep nice.

Get you some Tenacity herbicide for your pump up, it's a post and pre-emergent broadleaf
herbicide labeled for turf.
The Trimec formulations work well too.
I wouldn't rely on a single compound herbicide to kill hard to control broadleafs.
My side business is noxious weed control, I've never had a problem with controlling lawn weeds.
The fall application is the most important.

The slower the kill , the better the kill.
Most of the thick stem weeds with small leaves are better controlled at the lower application rates with a Trimec formulation.

Trimec is about the only think that will kill clover and violets. Works great on Creeping Charley too.

PAR III, one application last Spring and all I have now is beautiful grass! Before I had every weed known to man, including Plantain.

I am always up for trying something new. Where do you get the Tenacity and Trimec compounds?

Dude, unless it says DuPont Orange on the barrel, it won’t work, and guess what, it will be back next year

This is why young folks need to make "six figures" because they pay folks for everything including cooking and doing the dishes...I knew a single thirty something woman who lived alone and paid a maid to clean her house. I was like "how messy can it be if you pick up after yourself...?

P.S. my yard was nice until I had a well dug and the drillers destroyed it...the neighbors wife handed my wife a landscaper card i said " I just shelled out 20 grand tell her to mind her own effin business..." I have been working it and have it smoothed out, and I seeded once. The natural grass is slowly growing back in, and the wife is like "it will take forever" I said "grass seed is $50 for 20 lbs I will seed it later after the natural stuff starts overtaking it...I figure a landscaper will gouge me another 10 grand I can wait. I am no expert but there is a trick, you let the existing grass grow long, then mow it and blow the clippings on the bare spots = free seed or that's my plan anyway...:)

i never understood owning property then paying someone to take care of it, i thought that was the reward of the american dream getting to work with your hands on your very own yard, now it seems to be the american greed how much can i make off my property's

Same here but the roofers tore it up. Kill the weeds, grow some grass.
