Assembling my engine last night. I installed my 67 273 timing marker on the water pump and it put the stationary degree indicator on the passenger side of the engine. I put my piston stop on and found TDC and marked the harmonic balancer. All the advance marks engraved into the harmonic balancer are on the drivers side of the engine and I see no way to time the engine. It is an aftermarket harmonic balancer supposed to be for my engine. I am looking for suggestions of what I should do? If I had a timing pointer that set up on the left side of the engine everything would probably be correct but the stock one wants to show on the right side unless I install it backwards. Help!!!

I'm not sure that I understand your issue...

What timing cover, radiator, and water pump are you using and in what vehicle???

If I know what you have and where you need to go, I may be able to offer a suggestion and help you from going down the wrong path...

Pictures would be very helpful if you can post a few...

What side of the timing cover are your timing marks?

What year and model vehicle is it in?

What radiator are you running? the 60's style or 70 and later?

What water pump do you have, aluminum or cast iron?

you are going to need to put a timing mark on the balancer on the passenger side to match tdc on the timing chain cover...by using the diameter of the balancer you can figure out how far to measure to find additional timing makers...

or you can change out the timing chain cover..water pump and radiator to match the newer damper...

Thanks, after looking at the factory balancer there don't appear to be any marks on it but I have to clean it.

Too far down the road for that.

Stock 1967 LA that came in the 67 notch I am working on.

They are not on the cover, but on a bolt-on bracket that attaches to the bottom two bolts of the water pump.

1967 Barracuda notch 273.

New stock for the motor, purchased from NAPA.

The damper is for 70-up. Very easy fix.
Assemble everything, then just bring #1 to TDC and mark the damper with a saw blade right at the 0 mark on the timing tab.

We had the same thing with our 273 cover on 340 block and with a new Pioneer harmonic balancer: cover marks are on the passenger side but the mark on the damper is over on the driver's side at TDC.

2 solutions:
- Make a timing marker for the driver's side to mate up with your mark on the damper.
- Make new marks on the damper to line up with the ones on the 273 cover.

Here is a pix of our added timing indicator on the driver's side, made from 1"X1/8" steel strap. The long flat part presses hard against the side of the timing cover to keep it very stable.

A timing tape on the damper is a very nice addition with either solution. We added a Mr Gasket timing tape afterwards to the damper and measure timing against the 0 mark on the new scale. Note that the Pioneer damper pictured here is quite not the same diameter as the stock SBM damper so a 7" BB Chevy timing tape actually gives a bit better accuracy with that damper, but either is around 1 degree off at 45 degrees advance so either is reasonably accurate.

Yes my new balancer is larger diameter than the stock one. I think I will order the timing tape for the larger balancer and leave everyting on the right side of the motor and finish putting the motor together this afternoon.

Thanks to all who chimed on on my question. I will decide a solution and finish the engine assembly tonight. I will be posting up the next batch of photos on my build thread when the engine is ready for paint. I appreciate all your help!

OK, just measure the damper diameter and get the tape that is closest in diameter. The motor won't know what was listed on the packaging LOL

BTW, we did the added timing marker on the driver's side because the water pump inlet was reversed from the old 273 and it blocked ANY possible view of the original 273 timing cover marks. So when you are in the garage next, put the water pump in place and see what you have with that before getting further down the road.

The water pump is on the motor already, the stationary timing indicator fastens to the motor by the two bottom water pump bolts.
