Header Headache

I just pulled the motor (340) and tranny (727) on my 1968 Barracuda. What a major project when it came to the drivers side header. I am not sure of the manufacturer of the headers but I had to sawsall the header into pieces to get it off, it was wrapped around the starter and was inside the torsion bar. If I hadn't cut it I would have had to remove the torsion bar completely, I did notice that the headers were actually cut and re-welded on 3 of the 4 tubes when they were installed.............These headers I guess are around 10 years old.
Is this the normal with this car and headers in general? Does someone make a header that I wont have such a major issue with when I go to put the motor back in? Also will/should I buy a mini starter because the header was wrapped so tightly around the starter and made it almost impossible to unbolt it let alone slide it out.
Any help would be appreciated, I am sure I am not the first one to run into these issues.
Thanks

Hi there,, welcome to the site.

The short answer is to use the Doug's, or the more costly TTI's if your cars been lowered, and ground clearance is an issue. If you maintain regular ride height, many folks find the cheap Summit headers to be good..

Your question gets asked weekly, I did a "search" of "best 340 header", and got this
for you, for a quick over-view.

There's a lotta knowledge and support here. and don't be afraid to use the "search" button for specifics..

hope it helps

sounds like TTi's you just removed.. there are no "easy" headers to install, they each have their pluses and minuses.. do your home work - pre-read instructions online.. and yes, get a good mini starter.

That's hilarious, when the torsion bar is 10x easier to remove than hacking a perfectly good header to pieces.

Only 10X easier? I guess there are some things guys scare away from. Like torsion Bars.

TTI's are what you want have/had them on 2 different dusters..will buy again if needed well worth the money spent..cheap headers are cheap for a reason..

TTI Shorty headers are the only ones I've ever installed in an A Body "easily"...

Almost as easy as using a fork.

Jees those things are dangerous, and you don't poke holes in your face with your fingers.:D

There is a sequence that if followed makes headers not bad at all.
My own had that sequence.

Unbolt the motor mounts
Raise the car about 30 inches in the air
Pull the steering center link
Pull the starter
Raise the engine
Push it over to the passenger side
Start the header in straight up on end right in front of the bell
Tilt up into place

Put it all back together running the center link through the header tubes. (no big deal) :D

I run 1.03 T bars and 15" 70 tires and blast right through parking lot transitions and such without any problems.

Oh, and a hundred bucks says I can pull either torsion bar in 15 min or less with nothing but a pair of needle nose pliers and a floor jack.
