header wrap on stock exhaust manifolds?

i was thinking may wrap my exhaust manifolds and pipes around the firewall to reduce temp in eng compartment and maybe make it a lil bit quieter with the header wrap stuff . does that stuff really cool the engine more like it says? plus i want to maybe make them look better then the ugly rust that is on them its called header wrap but it will wor4k on ex manifolds right? just wondering how to make the engine looks and be cooler.
 
For cast iron, put it in a box and send to Jet-Hot or somebody who does a similar (mil-spec) coating. You'll notice a slight reduction in temps, but not much. Remember that the radiator is upwind. Noise wise, cast iron is as quiet as it gets already. Make sure your gaskets seal completely and install an underhood pad. Header wrap is a major pain in the a$$ and should be avoided on any rig you ever plan to drive in the rain.
 
Curb feelers would be more effective.

Waste of money and time.

lol why would u say that ima get curb indacaters for my wagon ive seen old cars around here with them they look cool. expecially on this old mans cutless around my town. with the big ol cat whiskers off the sides lol

When working on a slant-6, it is very much worth your while to get the good gaskets for the manifolds-to-head and intake-to-exhaust junctions.

Header wrap is a major pain in the a$$ and should be avoided on any rig you ever plan to drive in the rain.

Interesting. Please elaborate; what happens when it gets wet?
 
It soaks up water like a sponge. NO header company will warranty a wrapped header for this reason, they will rust out quickly. Also a lot of header wraps are not super durable, they will eventually loosen up or fall apart after repeated soakings.

Go ahead and try it, but don't expect miracles.
 
whats the "goal" or "goals" of wrapping the manifolds that you wish to achieve? do you just want it quieter? is it too hot in the car from the engine? are you looking for more power? is your car running hotter than it should be?

if you want it quieter and cooler inside the car just get some sound deadening heat material stuff. personally ive never used it because i like noise but i heard it works well. header wrap probably wont cut noise down at all.

If your looking for more power this is not a very good way to do it. its a big waste of time and money as has been discussed above. it might gain you a very very small percentage of power but will eventual fall off.

if your cars running hotter than it should be this is a band aid for the problem. something is not right if its running hotter than it should be and should be fixed properly.

im not trying to sound like a jerk. i just would like to talk you out of buying header wrap as it is not practical.
 
yea i probbly aint gonna buy it but theres no way the car being a dailydriver i can pull the exhaust manifolds off with the engine still in the car and ceramic them is there?
 
Please understand…. A wrap or coating will do next to nothing. Under hood temp will be nearly unchanged (in all practicality not noticeable at all). Same with noise….. Your dog may hear a change but you won't.

As far as looks go…… Sand blast and a high heat cast iron paint.

Good to know — I was considering wrapping the headpipe on my turbo Dodge, but sounds like that would be a poor idea.
 
I Have Them On My Fenderwell Headers, After A Long Run I Can Grab The Header And Not Get Burned, It Does Cut Down On Engine Heat, Plus I Like The Look, The Greasier Looking The Better, Just Gives That Old Race Car Look Under The Hood, Not For Everyone But I Like It.
 
If you want to bring your underhood temps down get your cooling system in shape: good radiator, good fan, good fan shroud, 180 t-stat, high flow water pump, spring in lower hose. make sure it is not running lean, etc. Those underhood temps will be low then.
 
the main idea behind header wraps is to keep heat inside the header therfore increasing exhaust velocity and scavenging ability
