Hello Mopar friends, I’m wondering what headers will fit on a 67 barracuda with a 318 with no modifications, I was told Doug headers would & are there different ones for 273,340&360? I’m still kinda new to all the differences and imagine different heads would probably use different headers, thanks for helping me learn this stuff in advance!

Well, a 318 never came stock in a 67 Barracuda, so you should probably be looking at listings for a 1968 Barracuda 318. The general consensus is that the only headers that are a clean fit are TTI. Doug's, Hooker, etc. all require bashing or bending, or so I have heard.

Be aware that running a second tailpipe over the axle in a 67 is difficult because of how the fuel tank strap is secured on the right side. It can be done, but it will be tight, and you can't run a big pipe. 2-inch or less is recommended.

Thanks! And for the tip on the gas tank strap! It’s originally a 273 car but I acquired it as a roller and have a 318 and lots of parts for it but still not totally sure of what motor I’m going to use.

doug's or TTI, you'll likely have to massage some shifting linkage depending on what you're running operationally transmission wise, but nothing major.

The tri-y headers by Sanderson or Schumacher is another out side of the TTI and Doug’s that fit pretty good if you can find a set not sure they make them any more. I have a set on my car right now. Regardless of the manufacture and factory tolerances. What fits perfect on one car may not be the case on another.

Why bother,
AFAIK there are only two good reasons for to run a header, namely;
Scavenging and Inertial tuning; neither of which are desirable on a stock 318.

The stock cam has like 20* of overlap, so scavenging is not gonna occur.
Inertial tuning sure but to what effect?
You are likely running gears in the window of 2.76 to 3.23s, Your rpm is gonna be in the basement about 80% of the time., and the engine heavily throttled, perhaps 95% of the time. Headers for you, are more or less dead weight and a waste of money.

Buy a torque-convertor instead.
Money way better spent.
I like a 2800.

counter point: headers sound frikkin' cool.

So, lemmee get this right, you guys are saying that, with a 318/no modifications, spending 600 bucks, or more for a cool sound or a cool look, are good reasons to install headers?
Choot, $600 will buy a heckuva good convertor, that can get you deep into the power curve and make your otherwise stock teener, run thru first gear like a cat on fire.

Yes.

And no one was arguing what was better spent money, headers or converter.

The OP never mentioned anything about a converter.

Why? A lot of expense and work for no benefit.

There is a benefit(s) to headers. Even on a stock 318 2bbl. Some disadvantages too. Some are personal preferences. Here is a list of some reasons someone might make this swap:
  • Much easier to run your own dual exhaust at home. They make a lot of header back kits that can be cheap. Also, very easy if you choose to dump before the rear end.
  • Performance - I did an ACTUAL TEST at the drag strip. I picked up 2.5 tenths and 2 mph in my van (stock 318 2bbl) in only the 1/8 mile.
  • Sound. Some like the deep throaty sound.
  • Looks. Many think they look cooler than stock manifolds.
I suggest buying a quality set (TTI or Dougs) and use a mini starter if you do make the swap.

Some late model large outlet Magnum manifolds would be a good choice.

So yur good with helping the newbe spend a lot of money, which is hard to come by these days, on something he doesn't need, but offer no alternative.
And besides that, OP already approved my answer.

Remind me never to call you "friend".........

I put a set of Mickey Thompson Try Y's on my 73 340 Challenger. No other modifications. 9.75's with stock manifolds or open headers. I thought I'd pick up a tenth. Nope.

OP, @67sfFish , perhaps start a new thread
stating what you have, and what you wish to achieve, and your budget
Or I can delete everyones posts including my own for questions and suggestions. The OP can do a little homework and put any headers he chooses, for that application. Our choices and recommendations are simply opinions.

I've got 2.5 inch tailpipes on my 67. Reproduction 67 tank with original tank strap. No clearance problem. 360, TTI headers and TTI 2.5 inch X-pipe exhaust.

Agree. Plus, they will already be there if and when the OP decides to upgrade that stock 318.

He’s not a newbie, he’s been here over a year. And he can spend his money on whatever he likes. He asked about headers and got plenty of answers. Now it’s up to him.
