Heat cable

I could use some advice. !972 Scamp slant 6 automatic with factory/dealer air.
My heater cable is bendings. I have checked all moving parts/doors and the cable and everything move freely. Heater assemble end working ok but control lever end seems to be at the wrong angle. Instead of sliding, it just bends the cable. Both ends are fastened into the holding clamps in what looks like the factor adjustment. I have lubricated the cable and it slides free. Any thoughts. Maybe it has bent so many times it's too weak to stay straight? (probably not)

It's the only thing I can think of besides binding parts, so I think you might be overlooking the cause somehow.
