:banghead:Ok this bastard has become a b*ti&h to start i have to most of the time hook jumper cables up to it and crank and crank till it fires , once it runs it will run like a sewing machine but if you turn it off it goes back to being hard starting .
one idea i had was the battery but i have charged it and still hard starting. its taking all the fun out of it i can drive it all over but forget about stoping somewhere unless i want to play with it for 20 minutes to get it to start. ecu coil are new

any help would be

Hard to start as the starter is dragging or just won't fire? If its just not firing what ignition are you running?

i am running the Electronic conversion kit that i got from year one it had the ecu aka the Orange box all that stuff is new because last year i replaced it all. not the starting dragging just wont fire but what seems to getting it over the hump is hooking it up to my truck and letting it sit then just crank away

What type of coil are you running? Also is the ecu grounded well. The airgap for the relector to pick up good? How do the spark plugs look? If they are loaded from too much fuel they will fire hard. Just some things to check.

coil? i am running a accell . but see i can go out frist thing in am and after a while it will finally fire and run like a champ drive it miles running solid no stumpling etc. then i can turn it right off with it being warm and it will go back to being hard starting . the ecu is ground well as is the motor with 2 extra ground wires to ensure its ground well...spark plugs i can see that if it runs rough

i am really at a loss like rag in the gas tank lighter kinda loss

I was also told ingition switch could be bad but i have never heard of that but i am not that smart

If you are cranking it and release the key to the run position does it fire? Its not a matter of being dumb everyone starts somewhere. Its a matter of being patient and working thru it. The airgap on the reluctor in the distributor needs to be checked as well.

Do you have a choke? Do you pump the gas two or three times before cranking? Did you ever verify ignition while cranking? Do you have enough advance dialed in for base timing?
There are plenty of things to inspect to diagnose your troubles....

Whats your inital and total timing. How many cranking amps is your battery.

Try putting a jumper wire from the battery + to the coil + just before you try to start it and see if it helps it start better. Once started unhook the wire.

Ok when I crank it and snap the key to the on position it fires ....does that mean my switch is done . I have never heard of that someone educate me

Now its gets when I crank it over I have to place the car in N it will only crank a few times in park then nothing . Then when I place it in n and crank then snap back to run it will fire . I read that thread I understand what they are saying but my volts are good everywhere

Could you explain this??? Not understanding what you are saying.

Did you try to start it with the jumper wire I suggested above to see how it starts?

Id first verify that your getting spark in the "start" position. Pull number 1 plug out and hook it up to the wire and lay it where you can see it from in the car. Then go crank it over and make sure its sparking. If it is, then whats your timing set at and how is your carb baselined and what carb is it? if not, Id investigate as to why its not sparking while cranking.

Ok when I go and try and start it it will only turn over a few times while the car is in park then will not do anything nothing turn the key nothing then I have to put the car in N and it will again crank over ok just to explain this hard starting is a problem as of late and when I get the car started it runs as good has it always has just when I shut the car off it goes back to being a ***** to start . I have found that if I snap the key back to run it will fire faster then if I keep trying to crank it . The battery is fine .

have you put a new ignition switch in this car? reground your starter relay and make sure all your GROUNDS are good and you have a solid connection to the relay

no the switch I am sure in the original one

you need to make sure you are getting 100% of a connection at the bulkhead . i bypassed mine as instructed in the MAD diagrams and ALL my problems went away. i would suggest you start right at the bulkhead connectors. you could have multiple problems, but the bulkhead modifications are easy and cheap insurance that everything is getting the voltage it needs.there are a bunch of diagrams in the thread links i gave you

It is the large plastic connector where the engine wiring, runs into the passenger compartment.
It is near where the steering column goes thru the firewall.

Explain what all u mean by bulkhead
over time , those connectors get corroded and rusty etc. that is main power feed to every thing inside the car. if you read through threads and follow the links in the threads, it explains every thing in great detail
