I am kicking the idea around if putting a 4 speed in my car. It's a 70 Dart with a 340 and 4.10's.

I know a guy who has a Hemi 4 speed, but I am not sure if that will bolt to a small block, maybe with the correct bell housing?

Can someone school me on the Hemi 4 speeds.

Buy the Hemi 4 speed cheap and resell it. You will have enough cash to buy 2 or 3 23 spline 833's

It is likely a long shaft box which is not really what you want in an A

"Generally" the hemi boxes have a little higher geared 1st gear than the 23 spline boxes, I never found it much of a bother, although it was "a bit hard on clutch" when I towed a car loaded to the gills from San Diego to N Idaho in 74-discharged from the Navy

The bolt pattern is the same as any other A833, but the front bearing retainer is likely larger. "Way back in the day" I swapped a junkyard, low miles 340 into my 70 440-6RR and had the bell turned in a lathe to enlarge the center hole.

What is it out of? Lots of differences in a Hemi Box.

I'm not sure what it came out of. Trying to get pics now. I got these two so far. It's for sure 18 spline.

Post the whole box. The tailshaft will tell a lot....whether it is 69 / earlier (B body had one mount) or 70/ later B/C/E--tail had TWO mounts, one for B/C and the rear one for E

If it's short tail it's for A body

I'm going to go look at it on Friday. He wants $500.

Good grief! An 18 spline for 500 bucks and you don't own it yet?!!! Buy first ask questions later, Lol! Agree with Toolman, you could buy 3 or 4 of what you really need when you sell that one.

Lol! It ain't going anywhere. The guy was going to build a 68 Dart Hemi replica, but the project fell through. He is a chevy guy so it's just sitting there. I totally forgot he had it. Ill own it Friday, I'm sure. Ill then need to make a parts list for the 4 speed conversion.

Groovy! Post up some pics when you get it.

I would say that the "oh" is a zero. 1970 model year. G for St.Louis.

I could be mistaken. But, I think the PP number is TBE part number for trans.

Ok, I got it. Here are the pics..it does appear to have a b body tailshaft. From what I've read you can get an adapter plate to a body location?

Sorry, I'm new to 4 speeds.

The adapter plate seems like a PITA unless you are willing to do "mods." It is outlined over at BigBlockDart

I haven't look d it up yet, but I will. I'm bummed, I thought from what I read it wouldn't.be an issue. I guess after getting it home and researching a little more, the cross member and shifter occupy the same space.

I was wrong about the adapter. It mounts to the REAR mount of a 70/ later transmission

BigBlockDart has revamped the site, and not for the better, says some of us. Here's the "old site" tech pages, there's a LOT of great info there on several subjects. You might want to download some of it before it somehow gets lost.

Tech Index

Here's the t hing about the long shaft adapter mount

"here are a few other mods required to use this adapter. The B-body mounting lugs must be ground down to keep the lugs from hitting the trans support rail (Or you can notch the support rail.) (Green arrow.) Also, you will have to give the trans tunnel a couple of dimples with a ball peen so that the adapter attaching bolts don't jam against the tunnel. (Yellow Arrow.)"

Just swap the rear housing and mainshaft for an A Body ones. That main shaft is special. Should come out even on money. It looks like the small front bearing retainer. Good to go.

Trouble is, this is an early b body trans, which only has 1 mount.

I wish it were that easy. Lol. Finding one is the problem. Nobody has over locally. I was lucky enough to find this one. I know brewers has them, I guess.

If you have other parts to gather to make the swap, just hang onto it. It will happen. You might find that one is unobtainium for someone (ie date n all that) and they are willing to swap pedal assembly, bell, box and money for it. Lots of hot rodders in PNW....patience. There is a guy in Yelm WA, another in Arlington ....the arlington guy is B body i think....$0.02

Maybe Wildcat is willing to trade...never know.
