Good Morning, does anyone know what the original finish should be on this latch?
im refering to the safety latch that bolts to the under side of the hood. i was thinking that it might be zinc plated, does anyone know for sure..Thanks Rich

I'm thinking natural, mine (67 dart) is surface rusted uniformly. No signs of paint or other finish.

i dont want it to rust, car has fresh paint... i have acess to a zinc plater, maybe go that route?

The hood safety catch was black phosphate, loop was body color, the spring was also phosphate the latch was something else.

i just took the one off my 73 Duster and on the backside where it screws into the hood there is zero corrosion and its real shiny metal, almost like a zinc brightness to it.
maybe different years used different finishes?
there is no signs of black phosphate on this original one owner 73...

Maybe black phosphate. I’ve had some of my parts Black phosphated, It’s not the same black. I have had few NOS ones and some very Low mileage cars. So is it black phosphate not 100% sold

This is something that may have varied from year to year. Here are some NOS ones

Good morning, just wanted to thank everyone for their responses and pictures, it is very much appreciated. Im going to try and find a paint to mimic the phosphate , any suggestions?

Just need to be aware that dealer nos parts may not be the same as assembly line parts. Ie finishes may very well be different. Then again, assembly line parts can vary depending on the vendor. Bottom line is that there is no right answer to your original question!.,
