Installed new Hurst Pro-Matic shifter, instructions for wiring back up lights a vague to say the least. Picture shows shifter with 4 blades, two are for neutral safety which I don't need. I'm holding the plug in from factory floor shift. White wire is hot, purple not sure, ground maybe. I've plugged both into connections on left in picture, I get back up lights but in all the gears. Can't figure out how to connect for just back up lights. :banghead:
Called Hurst and he said to splice hot wire into the two connections on left. I don't know it didn't make any sense to me, but wiring always throws me for a loop. check back later

One of those wires should be hot with the ignition on, and the other should go to the backup lights.

Then put a multimeter on the switch terminals and find out which two terminals give a continuity reading ONLY when you put the shifter in park. (connect your two wires to those two terminals on the switch)

That help?

I will check that out next, is that reading with shifter in park or reverse? White wire is hot with ignition on.

Ah crap, yes in reverse sorry.

Then the other wire should go to your backup lights, right.
(as if you connected those two wires together your backup lights come on?)

All you have to do then is find the two terminals on the switch that have continuity only in reverse and connect your two wires to those two. (orientation doesn't matter)

Keep in mind that the switch may not be in the right position from the dealer, and may have to be adjusted. (might be why they are on all the time when you tried it before.)

If he told you to connect the +12 volt wires to the left terminals on the switch, then it would logically follow that when the ignition is on, one of the right side terminals will have voltage only in Park or Neutral and the other right terminal should have voltage only in Reverse. This assumes the switch is adjusted correctly. Connect your +12 volt wire to the top left terminal and check for voltage on the top right terminal in each shifter position. Do the same when the +12 volt wire is connected to the lower left terminal. It should be obvious which right side terminal is which function. Connect your wire that goes to the reverse lights to the right side terminal that is powered only in reverse. That should be the purple wire if I remember correctly.

If the left switch is towards the rear, then that is one spec'd in the instructions; the instructions pretty clearly illustrate the reverse light connected to the left pair; see figure 8 on page 13. The test Crackedback outlined above should confirm this for you.

The left pair and right pair of contacts each is to a separate microswitch; there are 2 microswitches stacked back-to-back. The right pair is for the NSS.

Well no wonder I had instructions upside down! It came down to the switch was off a little and took some adjusting so it would hit the reverse bump on shifter. The testing worked out just like they said. Thanks again guys for help
