I am doing a red, white & blue paint job for a guy & he wanted me to use House of Kolor base coat. They have a red, white & blue colors thats suppose to be spot on the same as the flag. I order 1 qt. of each. That should be more than enough. NOT ! The base coat i got is very very translucent. It doesnt cover worth s**t. I am not impressed. So now i have to order more. I was going to go to my local PPG dealer where i buy all my supplies & see if they could match the flag colors. Im sure they couldve. I shouldve listened to my instincts. Never again. lmao

Sealer coat and then four full colour coats for full kolor saturation with my HOK403, Kleared, infused and then 2 more coats of Klear. These shots are after the first klear coat. I'd have to find the paint bill, but pretty sure we dipped into the 6th gallon of Kolor on my Bee by the time the underside was painted.

Are you trying to paint a whole car on 3 quarts?

I don't remember how much paint we ended up with on my Challenger. I do remember they use different mixing ratios for the reducer and such that mean not getting as much coverage as other brands. That said, I was quite happy with the end result.

no just some stripes i know what it takes to do a whole car with no engine bay, trunk area & jambs i can do a car with 2 qts of PPGs DBC

Ok...I kinda figured you did. I was just askin. lol

Lots of two stage colors are see thru without four to six coats.

Big problems with cars today. The UV rays from the sun can penetrate through the color if there isn't enough base coat. When that happens the primer oxidizes and paint starts pealing. Car dealers are aware of this so they use just enough to get past any warranty .

Whenever I paint with House of Kolor, I tint the sealer to try and match the topcoat and it still takes 4-6 coats, sometimes more to cover, esp. on metallics!

It's a great product, but, it's like trying to paint with Kool-Aid!!!

A lot of the issue is the amount if voc that is allowed to enter the atmosphere from the factory. They limit this so the color coat is extremely transparent. Watch a Gm vehicle drive by sometime.... white tri coats especially. You can see vertical stripes in all of them. We don't spray until coverage anymore. We spray to match. Which is transparent with the correct undercoat. It takes a different thought process and application technique. Most painters fail this, over applicate and can't understand why their colors are always dark.

When I was a body man I would sand through the paint to see what color primer was under it. In 1998 Ford explorer had a light green metallic they could not match. I matched it 1st try. Painted white base coat then the green. Was spot on. They were painting over DP40 gray sealer.
