How do you cool you motor in between passes?

-
leave fan and pump on till gets to 120,only takes a few min, also charge batterys, then try to go back up to the line at the same temp

I would like to see some pictures ?? As this thread moves along we are finding the out more about the car. Motor, current cooling system ect... are you just using water or coolant? The op just tells us of a drag car that over heats. Do you have a fan shroud ? I personally have gotten lucky I guess in this category as I've yet to have a cooling problem with any combination. I personally run to homemade electric fans on the radiator and just traded in my Moroso belt drive electric pump for the real thing. I know these are expensive options for you but maybe is it possible something stupid is being overlooked (it would be in my cass) like a sticking thermostat or restrictive area? again the picture looking at your cooling area would be cool (excuse the pun lol) who knows maybe like a fan shroud is missing or something? I'm just spitting in the wind here at this point, but hoping it's something easy. I know I don't like spending crazy money on stupid little aftermarket parts. And then trying to get them to fit..:banghead:
My car doesn't overheat, I was just looking to see if there was a better way to cool it down in between rounds than the method I'm using. One that wouldn't cost a fortune.

I would love to do that, but I think you need an electric pump to do that. i currently run a big electric fan on the radiator which I leave running after shutdown for about 5 minutes, but the pump is OEM belt driven.

On very hot days I'll drive the front of the car onto ramps and use a carpet dryer aimed up at the block. I picked up this tip from a very good bracket racer in my area and works quite well. Still not as good as circulating the cooling system with an electric water pump, but usually I can get the equivalent of 20 minutes of sitting with no fan in 5 minutes.
Do you know where I can get a carpet dryer cheap??

I mainly run 1/8 mile stuff, but do occasionally get to Ennis. It really just depends on what's going on. I run bracket and 7.0 index so there's usually something going on within reasonable driving distance.

Electric water pump, electric fan and a Temp Controller, that turn the water pump on at 140 and the electric fan on at 170.

Pull in the pits turn eng off, start generator, battery charger and walk a way. fan and pump will shut of when there ready. usually only takes 5 minutes on the fan and another 15 on the water pump. NO T-Stat so when the motor heat soaks the electric fan will turn on for another minute.

Has worked really well for me so far.

Agreed, that method works great, but costly for my engine configuration. (Gen III Hemi)

Well, maybe I need to tell you about the current setup:
The car (duster) is a fully gutted race car. The motor is a 5.7 GenIII hemi stroker. It has a super tall drag pak intake manfold and a Holley 1050 Dominator on top.
I have an OEM belt driven water pump. It is the only thing that is belt driven, no alternator. The GenIII's are designed to run at a higher temp than the classic motors. They come with a 204 degree or higher thermostat stock as I recall. I'm currently running a 160 degree thermo in it and an oversized aluminum radiator with a huge shrouded pusher fan in front of the radiator. So far, in the 90 degree heat here in Tx, I can start the run with the water temp at 180 and it will finish the run at about 210 or 220. I leave the pusher on in the pits for 5 minutes and the radiator is cool, but is that really cooling down the whole motor? I also put a box fan on top of the radiator angled down at the motor, mostly it hits the carb and intake. Maybe the carb is the only thing that I need to keep cooler than the rest, maybe it is okay like it is. I do know that I can run the 8th mile with the temp starting at anywhere from 180 to 210 and it makes no difference in how the car performs. Maybe I'm trying to fix something that isn't broken?

I raised the back of the hood up a 1/2 inch and that helped under hood heat to escape enough to end my overheating issues.Didnt cost a dime and took 15 minutes.

On My ruster Race Car I did the same - But rear of hood is up about 4" now for other reasons.

It helps get the hot air out and Along with Elect fan / Water pump and Leaf Blower it is not a problem.

Oh yes 7/8 Of my radiator is blocked off to fresh air due to aerodynamic and Wehight distribution improvements

Went 10 Rounds Hotlapping Last weekend in Wilkesboro NC with No problems.. Hand held leaf blower and crew members saved my life! and Got 2 Elimination final Wins with 80* air and ~85% Humidity.

I am having a hard time finding any info on them , but ShoGun industries made a Tik-Tok sequential switch for electric fan / water pump combos.
We used one for years in our last car.
It would run the water pump for 30 seconds , then run the fan for a minute...........it repeated these cycles until you turned it off.
Our car would go from 210 degrees in the late rounds to 160 in maybe five minutes.
I really liked it , but I don't know if Sho-Gun is still in business anymore.

I rigged up a bathroom exhaust fan timer to my fan and water pump. Set it and forget it.
