How do you put the defrost hoses back on?

I was putting in a cd player in my 68 Valiant so I took the hoses off for more room. I just pulled on them to get them off and the little clips, that I didnt know was there, fell off. I cant figure out how to put them back on.
 
Call me crude but I put mine on with hose clamps. They don't fall off again.
 
The clips slide over the bottom opening of the defrost ducts, with the teeth up, then the tubes slide over that and hold. Most of the time the tubes are destroyed before those clips come off.
 
so the longer part of the clip goes on the outside? I must have lucked out because my tubes are like new! :) thanks
