on a 65 oem 273 commando engine ... how many valve springs per valve ?

I thought the commando engine had two valves springs per valve and maybe a dampener too loke the 340 .

my 273 only has one valve spring per valve.

just wondering if it may have had a valve job over the years and not put back to stock .

Thanks for any infomation !
john

Hey John, dad and I just put in a new cam and lifters etc and they were single springs with the damper...I thought the damper was another spring and we removed them for cam break-in, then realized they were the damper DOH!! Not sure if factory was dbl springs or not

yeah... what is the purpose of the dampener spring anyway?? is it just to stablize the main spring side to side movement ? something like that??

yes..... mine has only one main spring on each valve.

hi, the 273 came with a single spring only!! no doubles or dampners!! the 340 spring was the first to use a dampner.the specs on 273 is 100# seat, 184 # open. the comp cams spring 901 is better spring for 273 , 101# seat, 242# open. just food forthought. the dampner was to control valve float.

perfacar !.......
Thanks !
That was great info. I didn not know that !

ok..... my appears my heads have NOT been worker over before hand then. all oem then.
When I installed the new valve stem seals, the old seals were all in pieces !
it was smoking like a locomotive ! now with the new seals , it's better but when you get on it hard it still smoking . must be another issue .

yes. it has a pvc valve on the valve cover . it a new one and works fine !
engines as 82K on the clock ..

the intake gaskets are a felpro style .. pressed cardboard .
yes I used orange permatex on all the port perimiters when I installed the ld4b intake . I read on this site I should NOT have used any permatex around the intake ports .. my mistake there . and that could be an issue sucking oil from the valley area.
heard that permatex desolves and gets suck into the port creating a void and suck oil from the valley .
That could very well be a spot to look at if the smoking does not clear up when on the throttle hard.

Only put Permatex around the water ports.

Didn't know that. Thanks for the info. I put in some springs that were supposed to be for a 340 and they were pretty big. (diameter) I had clearance problems with the rockers. tmm

I just read that about not to put sealer around the ports just after I installed the intake.

Stroker, if people didn't make mistakes they wouldn't put erasers on the end of pencils! LOL (I made a few mistakes with my 273 that I would like to fix this winter. Time for paint, got to pull the motor anyway.) tmm

hahahaha ....lol

now that I think about the intake gaskets I purchased ,,,, the new gaskets I bought did not have that rubber sealant around the boarder by the port areas . that is why I put sealer there.. my mistake !
