I have searched and searched and was unable to find any info in the forums on how to check the VTP clearance but many folks saying that it had better be checked. I found this article and it seemed to me as very well thought out and informative. I hope it helps anyone else searching for this info. Its is a Ferd site, so please be gentle.

the clay method is the old standby, but if the clearance is close, its not very accurate. I put a dial indicator on the retainer with the light checking springs on, and rotate the crank and check every 5 degrees. When you find where its closest, go back and redo that area every 2 degrees. this will tell you exactly how much clearance you have.
