How to physically see and feel a bad roller lifter

Hey guys I got a tick on my driver side on my 5.9 magnum, wasn’t there until I started driving it after a hour. I pinned pointed it to the driver side rear lifters cylinder 5/7. I have a extra set I wanted to ask how could I tell right of the bat these are the ones making noise?

Would they compress easy, with the rockers still on would there be play? Etc.

Take about a 3 or 4 foot length of garden hose or heater hose and put it against the valve cover and up to your ear. U will hear a loud noise when your above the offending lifter. Kim

if it's collapsed or flat wore out you could compress easily or there would be a ton of play. have you popped a vavle cover to investamagte yet?
 
Thanks for the response! Kim I did the garden hose tech and it sounds like it’s coming from both sides.

I removed the valve cover, there’s no slop pressing the rocker tip down, although I feel some side to side on 2 rockers.

I’m thinking I might of added too much preload, not allowing the lifter to compress causing a tick? Car runs great idles well also
 
I’ve wondered this myself. I reused the old lifters with longer pushrods on my 5.9 with a reground cam and hughes springs. There’s no soft lifters or any play, but the thing makes some noise. I’m kind of thinking that maybe the lifters are just worn out and that they aren’t up for fast ramps and heavy springs. Could also be that my pushrods are too short.

Yeah I know I’m on the same boat, might just swap them all out for a new set, if the the shorter rods don’t help.

Careful Kimmer. Not long ago I got chastized from the peanut gallery for recommending using a screwdriver in similar fashion. Apparently using a stethoscope is now the only "proper" way to do it. :rolleyes:
 
Magnum lifters tend to be noisy when they have too little preload as opposed to too much. How much was removed from the cam base circle and how much longer are the current pushrods from stock?
