I need help removing my A833 (70' interlock style/abody) tail shaft bushing. I changed out the bearing retainer gasket and seal, and the Tailshaft seal. I took my drive shaft in to get balanced and he asked me if I changed out the bushing, I said no and he told me to do it that it's cheap insurance.

1) do I have to?
2) if so how do I do it? The tranny is in the car- I really don't feel like taking it out.
3) the tranny looked good when I popped open the cover, no rust on gears, no metal shavings in oil.

There is bushing removal tool used to pull the bushing and also a tool to install
the new one. This can be done without removing the tail shaft and with it still
in the car. Also when installing the new bushing be sure to clock it so that the hole in the bushing lines up with the oil channel in the tail shaft. Note where the hole is when you pull the old one and you see what I'm talking about. I have those tools if you want a pic. I've saw the puller on ebay

Changing the tail shaft bushing with the trans assembled is a major pain in the *** if you don't have the right tools, I'd just run it as is and it'll probably be fine but if you do notice and vibration after you get the drive shaft back find a transmission shop that can change the bushing.

Here ya go with these tools a bushing change is a breeze

do you know what the tools are called exactly? (cudascott)

-daliant, so run it, and if theres anything funny going on, change it out? Whats a worst case sort of thing? What are the signs of it going bad?

Extension housing bushing extractor.

If it needs changed that bad it will be obvious.
You may want to pull and push the yoke up and down and see if it has a lot of play in it.
If it moves up and down more than about 10-20 thou then I would change it or be concerned that it will cause a vibration.

Transmission extension housing bushing remover. They are pricey if your only
going to use them once or twice really not worth buying but you might get someone to loan them to ya it only takes about 10 min. To do the job. As already stated you could just run the one in there, the tell tell sign of a bad one is a vibration in the drive line.
