I bought a 70 Swinger 340 and the fender tag and vin state it is a real 340 car. It has the ft sway bar and disc brakes. However someone told me that the ball joints dont look big enough for a V8. Can you tell me what the differences were and how I can tell beyond the fender tag and vin? I appreciate your help.

I've seen posts that a lot of the times there was a washer welded on the underside of the k frame.

VIN on the dash and radiator support match? It would seem unlikely that those would match on a fake.

I thought the washer was welded on the front facing side of the K-frame?

Has it got the wiring for the idle-stop solenoid?

I'm no expert on the slant six cars, but I don't know that they used different ball joints...torsion bars, yes, but ball joints?

I don't think any of the '70 340s came with AC, so that might be a dead giveaway.

They did not come with BBJ's till later. 70 Darts even 340 has SBJ. Should bea parshal VIN on the rad support drivers side ish and one some where in the trunk think it is under the trunk wether striping but not 100% on that. Should also be a vin tag in the driver door.

O ya and the washer on the front of the K. Should be able to see it ifyou look under the front of the car.

Also number is normally stamped in the trunk rail under the weatherstripping. Will also be a factory style hanger for the standart dual exhaust.

I thought the ball joints were the same on this model year so I did a quick parts search on advanced auto and same joint no matter what motor size.Only different size on years 73 and up,

Thanks for the tips. I need to check the rad support. Did the 6 cylendar cars come with disk brakes and the same dash? Thanks!

Some did if ordered,I got the paperwork with my car and the guy ordered the brakes and sway bar. My 70 has front factory kelsey hayes 4 pistons discs and a factory sway with the original slant 6

Yea you probably got the washer location correct, I just remembered that it was somewhere on the kframe.

340 Dash Tach was optional in place of a vacuum guage

LX GUY, Yes you could get A/C on a 340, even with a 4 speed.

340 cars came standered with the brakes and dash. All others the brakes were an option. Rally Dash was a 340 only thing in 70.

If you have the VIN plate for the dash and it matches the door sticker, fender tag, and the radiator core support stamping, I'd have to figure the car is genuine. All the other parts mentioned can be transfered from another car. The RH rear exhaust hanger bracket is a 340 only part and is welded to the floor so that's another one hard to fudge but not impossible.

It will have an H in the vin. Yes, some H code cars came with A/C. I'm looking a 70 Dart H code car painted B3 with A/C as I type this.

vin should be on the dash

Are the torque boxes "boxed"? I thought most of the "Performance" cars had them boxed. My 69 does. Does it have a 8-3/4 rear?

Can't always go by what parts are on the car. I once had a 70 dart with the trailer package. Fron't sway bar, HD torsion bars, HD rear springs and the car came with a S/6.

Thanks guys. It looks like everything checks out. I appreciate the great tips.

i have never seen a 1970 340 dart with the numbers on the radiator support. they are under the right front fender on the inner fender.

there is a vin on the radiator support, hard to see sometimes.

not on 1970 340 darts. the numbers are under the passenger fender on the inner fender. only this year for some reason. i think they where all built in canada.
