How too Narrow a gas tank!

I plan on narrowing a brand new replacement gas tank for my 64 dart vert to allow for more tire room!
:???: The question is really how to go about it so I can keep the stock filler neck!

The plan is also to use an in-tank electric fuel pump, and new aluminum fuel lines!

You do know the early As are known to puke fuel out the filler tube at the pump island right ?
I plan to put a 96 Cherokee fuel tank under my 67. I'll replace the trunk floor to be flat and mount the spare from a 90 Towncar in the Towncar manner. Who's to say what is the best plan. My plan was inspired by the comparison in trunk space, my 67 fish vert
versus brothers 92 'stang vert.

How much of the tank needs to be altered,just the corners,or more than that?Does it need to be sectioned?,How clearance do you need,or is it better for you to get a fuel cell,mrmopartech
 
after replacing the spare tire well ( doesn't come with gas tank strap mounts)
we haven't decided yet, to run the stock tank or not

kicking around the idea of dual fuel cells in the trunk
with room to still put a spare tire
they make an adapter to mate to the factory filler tube, (tube will need to be shortened)

also thinking to mount a fuel cell in the middle, under the speaker tray,in front of the spare tire
but would be hard to adapt the filltube

I would like to see this done. When relocating springs there's not enough room for the tailpipe on the passenger side. Please post some pics if and when you do it.

thats a really horrible spot for a fuel tank, right in line with the passenger side rear tire; most people put in a fuel cell because the engine isn't stock, meaning your probably going to be spinning it and have about 80 percent better chance of having a tire shread the wheel wheel
 
What are your plans for the rear suspension? Maybe being ignorant here but is the tank/filler on a vert. totally different from a 2 or 4 door?

I ask because on my 63' more door I relocated the springs inboard, moved the wheel wells in 3'' (mini tubed) and narrowed my 8 3/4 and had no probs with my O.E tank. I run 28x12-15 M/T's on 10'' wheels.

Only mod I made was to replace the tank strap J-bolt that hooked to the out side of the frame. I drill a 3/8 hole in the bottom of the rail, welded up a 5/16 nut and use a long 5/16 bolt for the strap. Not sure I even needed to do that but I didn't like it hanging outside the frame.

Also added a 3/8 sender to my O.E. tank. (FYI)

Now I can see you doing that tank mod. for exhaust clearance. My exhaust ends in front of the diff. w/turn downs just for that reason. Didn't want tank heaters.
