can anyone tell about how much HP a stock 89 dodge 318 is putting out? want to know what im working with before i start adding stuff...and i seen someplace that the heads off a 360 would fit the 318?

From what I can tell, 1988 ratings were 140 hp 260 ft-lb. 1989 added fuel injection and hp was at 170.

If it`s one of the roller cam, fuel injected engines it should be around 220 hp but if it`s a flat tappet carbureted version it`s probably closer to 190. Some of those late 80`s engines were real pigs.

Tell me about it! I started my project with a '79, 318 with a whooping measured 7.8-1 compresion ratio!

Let me start by saying you DO NOT want to put 360 heads on a 318 even if it is a decent year in HP ratings. Your hard pressed to use all the flow potentail of the 360 head on the small cube engine. Also, the much much larger head chamber will drop the comp. ratio like a rock and that is the last thing you need for any type of performance up grade.

Truly, your best bet is to stick with the 318 heads in most cases. Let us know what you want out of the engine/car and performance wise and we'll get ya there.

In my Duster, I started with a '79 318 (Cough cough, wheeez wheez) and added simple normal bolt on's and a small split duration Crane cam. These will add a nice power increase, (nothing that'll set the world on fire,) and a gear change to 3.21's. The car is high 14 capable in the 1/4.

With stock pistons, heads converter and tires!
(More to come later. This is a "For now toy" that I like to screw with. Just for fun.)

While that would be true, perhaps he just wants to work with what he's got.

h.p. and 318 shoud not be used in the same sentence:toothy10::toothy10::toothy10::toothy10:...

lol well i got the duster without an engine...and i had a dodge with the 318 in it...so thats what i used 2 put in the car...and as of now im not planning on changing much on the engine because i dont plan on keeping that 318 in there...but right now i dont have a shop of my own 2 work out of....and the fact that i have 2 pay for a bay and 2 store my car and the parts while im working on it lol....and im kind of just looking for a lil out of the engine while its in there...i would be happy with 250....but 300hp would be better lol...right now i got an edelbrock manifold, edelbrock carb. 600cfm...and an aftermarket fuelpump

Try a cam and a good set of headers they will put you in the 300 range , if you want to make real power and shut the 340/360 guys up check BJR 's threads on building a 322"or a 349" on the cheap Bobby makes better numbers than a 340 or 360 with of the shelf parts that cost the same or less than a new /fresh rebuilt 360

While getting 300 HP out of a 318 is certainly doable, a cam and headers on an otherwise stock 89 TBI 318 won't do it. 50-60 HP on top of the stock 170 is about it.

302 heads, a roller cam block,KB 167 piston ,headers. A mild build should go 325 h.p easy and more radical 400 h.p no problem.

cant find his post think u could post a link 2 it?

265-280 horse out of a stock compression 318 with headers, 4bbl manifold and intake, a decent cam is easily achievable. The larger cam will typically garner the higher number, but dont go too crazy with the cam. I am running a Comp XE268, which is about as radical as one should go on an otherwise stock compression 318. WIth convertor and 3.23 gears, it easily pulls mid to high 14s. It should be generating somewhere around 275-280 horsepower, as it is tuned well. I think anyone else can achieve the same.

220-230 seems a tad low, unless the cam being used is on the tame side. 240-250 would probably be a better average for a 4bbl, header, cam upgrade.
