Lost sometime Christmas week. Found when we (she) was unloading the pantry and china cabinets for the new floors. Tastes good. What is the shelf life for a fruitcake?

The old joke years back that my grandmother used one for about 10 years as a door stop. She put it on the counter while mopping & waxing the kitchen floor & my grandfather cut it & at a piece of it. I don't know how much truth there is to the story, but it is "food" for thought.

Crumble it, add some water and yeast. It will turn to wine after a week. Or go one step further and distill it into some brandy. Some kind of sugar and yeast is all it takes.

How did you make this discovery?
I make a lot of beer and have been studying the distilling process. I am a whiskey fan and belong to a local tasting group. It's a facinating industry with a rich history starting back in the 9th. century.

We like to play games at Christmas. My brother had an old trophy that he took the figure off the top of and in its place he bolted a fruit cake. We call it the Fruit Cake Cup. The winner of the game(s) gets to take it home (mostly the kids), for the year and bring it back the following year for the next winner. Well that fruit cake still looks fresh and soft, even though the package has broken open a bolt going through it. I think the bolt is going to disintegrate long before that cake does! 15 years old and still looking edible!

Fruitcakes are like Twinkies, they last for decades! Hey RRR do they still make fruitcakes in Claxton, Ga the FC cap of the world!??? ll

Cut it into slices, brown some butter in a pan and sauté the slices in the butter, then pour the butter over it all, then dump it in the trash....er, I mean....it’s actually pretty good that way. Learned that in culinary school!

I have to admit I actually love the things! But I was raised on boiled peanuts, cheesy grits, hominy, and greens! among other good things!

I still have not tried a fruitcake.

After reading all your comments, not sure if I would eat it or use it to caulk the tub in my shower lol

Fruit cakes don't get any love because some of them made by amateur cooks are absolutely horrible. Ask me how I know...
