I get the air resistance, road resistance part but I would like to have a bit more control personally

I'm not saying you're wrong but in addition to the friction benefits, you're forgetting the most important part; weight. Shaving ~50lbs of unsprung weight off the front end of the car is worth a legitimate amount of time in the quarter.
 
I was chatting with a junkyard owner in California. He said while sitting in the yard in the weather the old radial tires will fail like that often. The older bias ply tires will stay in one piece.
