So I recently swapped in a 318 with a 904 into my 1970 duster.

What is weird about it is that it fires up and idles at around 8-900 rpm and revs out and runs good in park. Whenever I put it in any gear, it dies almost immediately. It shifts pretty hard into gear and makes the car lurch a little bit.
I rebuilt the carb and tuned on it and it still does it.

Any ideas? I'm at a loss and so are my other mopar friends

*I don't have a kickdown linkage, so I put a spring on the trans so the kickdown bracket thing on the trans had pressure on it.
I took that off and it did not change anything.
But could the problem be a result of not having a kickdown?

The most popular causes for this (other than a bad torque converter) are retarded timing and too-lean idle mixture, and or a vacuum leak

ok, I will re check the idle mix, and it has no vacuum leaks. I will need to buy a timing light tomorrow to check that.
Around where would a totally stock 318 like the timing? 34?

You fucked up and pull the slant 6 out.
 
34 is a decent place to start.

Once the timing is in the realm of right...you can make sure the carburetors throttle plates are opened only to expose the transfer slot about as much as .020 ish ..or to make the shape of a square...and then play with the idle mix screws setting them an even amount of turns out..whatever that may be.. 1/2-2 1/2 turns out 'depending if it's a 4 corner idle holley or 2...or if it's a carter design.

If it wont idle after that... you have a carb issue or worse a bad tq convertor or ...the wrong one 'too tight'.
What cam? Stock?

bone stock everywhere. i have not done a thing to it but new valve covers

i will not be phased though.
it is faster now. and makes v8 noises.

Double check the tune on it. Timing, points dwell if it's got points, check the dwell anyway if it's electronic. There IS a spec. Put a vacuum gauge on it and make sure it's got a good signal. Smell the exhaust and see if it smells unduly rich. If you put the tools to it and pay attention, it'll tell you what's up.

yeah, when I go get the timing light tomorrow, I will pick up a vacuum gauge too.
the plugs need to be cleaned off so I can accurately read them. they were all sooty when I pulled them out. (that is from me pumping the **** out of it in order to get it started and dumping gas down the carb to make it start quicker when it was super cold out.)

is it a trans with a lockup torque conv could be stuck in overdrive mode if carb and tune is correct
 
I went back and re-read your first post and from that it sounds like your timing is retarded and your idle speed is set too high. 900 is way too high. The fact that is shuts off in gear leads me to suspect retarded timing. Make sure you get a dwell meter or at least some feeler gauges for the points. Without the points set properly, your timing will never be right. With everything stock, you should have probably 17hg vacuum as a minimum and more like 19-21. That is of course with the tune right.

I really don't know. as far as I can tell the trans has never been off of the motor. I will run the numbers on the trans tomorrow to see but I am not sure that will give me anything.

you can hear it in this video. and yes, it did go into gear in this video and move but I don't know what happened but it does not do it anymore.

If you want your transmission to live a long, happy life, you really should get the correct transmission kickdown linkage setup or go to a Lokar kit.
