I was at my friends beach place in Long Beach this weekend, his neighbor has had a old 70's motor home in the driveway for a long time. They were moving and were having a sale at the house.

They have always had cool stuff so i went to look, I looked in the motor home and it had one of those old Dodge truck auto trans shifters. I looked at the maufactures plaque, Made By Chrysler. HMMM, i looked underneath, Chrysler big block.

They said I could have it if i took the whole thing.

Does anyone know the specs on the engine and trans for one of those 440's found in those Chassis for those yrs? Is it worth getting or is it a hunk of junk?

If it is a Class "C" (van nose) motor home it is most likely a 400 or 440. If it is a Class "A" (flat nose) motor home and it is from the mid 70's and earlier it is most likely a 413. Being you said it has a dash shifter it sounds like an "A" so I would bet it was a 413.

I am looking for a motor home for a hunting rig and if you are looking for a big block maybe we could do some trading instead of parting out the motor home.

Let me know.

Its a pointy nose motor home, I think its 30 or 35 feet or so. Kind of a pointy front end, not the flat non aerodynamic kind. Did they make the 413 that far into the 70's? It looks like the motor home from that witchcraft movie with Peter Fonda and Warren Oats, Race With the Devil, they had a Vogue i think.

Done know how safe it is to drive, the guy says they havent driven it in 10 yrs, he started and ran the motor each week he said though. I turned the key and it needed cranking a bit, but idled and sounded fine.

Yea, the 413 was still available into the '70s in industrial/commercial applications like the chassis' in motor homes.

I am going back down there next weekend, i will try to take it for a drive to see if it is road worthy enough to drive to Eastern Wa.

i picked up a motor and trans out of a mh a couple years ago that turned out to be a 413. i did find that the "413" is not stamped or cast into the block anywhere. i guess that pistons and rings are hard to find.
