Hello everyone! My name is Rosemary and I joined today because I just cant figure out whats wrong with my 1973 dart sport. I'm 24 and the second owner of this car. I've had it for 7 years. It was purring like a kitten the other day as I was going to get gas. I stopped filled the tank and went to turn the key and start the car. I heard a loud snap noise come from near the column and the key turns to far clockwise and counterclockwise. I have since taken the steering column apart in hope that it was just the ignition cylinder. I have replaced that and the car still won't start. It doesn't even crank, it makes absolutely no sound. Having not checked anything else I went on the hunt and have found that the starter relay does nothing and since trying from the starter it's self nothing happens. The key still turns to far in both directions, but the ignition pin appears fine. I have misplaced my shop manual and my Chilton manual has no diagrams as I am trying to figure out how to remove the ignition switch.. if that is even the problem? I will be replacing the starter later today if I can find the $$$ to do so but can't figure out what is wrong within the steering column. What would make both these problems start at once? Thanks for any and all help!!!

i would look at the ignition switch in the column its behind the ignition cylinder and has wiring harnes that goes down thruogh the column. it sounds like that is what broke.

OK, AbodyJoe has a great tutorial on pulling the column down. Do a search, there may be more

You replaced the lock section but not the switch? I'd guess the electrical switch is what you need

Also look under the hood and see if you have the dreaded seat belt interlock reset button, see here:

If you have that you need to bypass it. There are two "yellowish" wires, IE yellow and with a tracer. Cut those and connect them together permanently, and then it won't matter what the interlock is doing. This thing interrupts the starter signal to the starter relay
