My 71 duster was previously converted to electronic ignition. I am have performance issues and could not figure it out, so i started looking at the ignition, i has a five pin ecu but 4 wires are not being used, strange. after a little research i found out the black and yellow wire go to the coil, and the two wire connection goes to the distributor. the only problem is my distributor only has one wire coming from it and it goes to the coil. Can somebody help me out and tell me what is going on.

distributor that has 1 wire is points. Does the reluctor look like a 8 pointed star or a octagon? Ie do you have points or a big honking brick in there? You can run points to a 5 pin ecu but its a gimick to prolong your points. If you have the point type distributor, ditch the ECU and run the 1 wire to the negative side of the coil and start from scratch. Electronic distributor has 2 wires in a single sheath (purple and green?) and needs an ignition box.

so what it seems like somebody started the switch and never finished in? My problem is mainly in 3rd and 4th gear when you stand on the pedal is looses power and pops

Sounds like the ECU quit and someone just subbed a points distributor. There is no difference in wiring for an ECU or points, that is, the resistor bypass, the resistor connection to the coil, and the "run" (dark blue) all hook up the same, whether points or ECU
