My 2001 Ram 2500 has a 360 magnum that has factory 245 horsepower at 4000 rpm. Why does the tach show the redline at 5000 rpm, and it shifts at the redline (5000 rpm) when floored? That is a 1000 rpm's over peak horsepower! I've even seen the Dodge horsepower/torq chart. After 4000 rpm's the horsepower starts to drop! But in real life, the truck pulls strong all the way to the 5000 rpm shift point! Please explain why they run it 1000 rpm's over the peak horsepower.....:violent1:

So when it shifts, rpms don't fall too far below the horsepower peak. If it shifted at 4000, the rpm drop would put it way under the powerband.

Makes sense, and thanks guys. Just didn't understand why it still pulled hard all the way up to 5000, with no noticeable drop in performance though a 1000 rpm's over.

Plus, the faster it goes (to a point) the less it takes to keep it there, so the fact that it's out of the peak doesn't matter.
