Just in a dilemma - the first 4 speed I ever bought and still have had the input shaft cut off to use I guess in a automatic crank. I'm now in the possession

of two nice 360 engines that both had automatics behind them. I know I will need a 360 standard flywheel which I have.

I have a little 273 factory 4 speed crank I'm using for reference with a factory input shaft. As you can see it goes way far in there.

On the 360's - one I put a flywheel one and the other has the auto flexplate on - the input doesn't look like it goes all the way like the 273 does.

If you look at the 273 flange - you can see it's about 1/4 shorter than the 360's.

The 273 crank has the blue tape over the throws.....wish I had the photos in order !

I think I'll be okay but thought I would get youse guys to weigh in..

Thanks in advance.....

That is one narly looking input shaft. I highly suggest you dress those spline so you don't have a disc sticking and dragging and polish up that shaft surface to get rid of the burrs.

Cut a inch off the input shaft and use a ball bearing pilot bearing.
He said the shaft was already cut short.
Another OP that could use punctuation, but that is not what he said. This is the first time he's been in possession of a 4 speed that HASN'T had the input shaft cut, the first one "that he still has" is cut, but not this one.

I agree with the cut (about 5/8") and bearing approach... after he cleans up that spline and shaft surface.

Thanks - it was much better before the fire at my storage caused by lightening about 5 yrs ago. Been looking for it lately and just found it yesterday. Will clean a little more before using - thanks for your info.

Thanks all for the input - kinda what I thought - not using the input shaft in the picture or the cut off one on a date coded 4/1963 4 sp trans for a big block. It's got the trunnion on it and bought it in about 1977 - yep just dug it out the other day for a guy building a Max wedge clone.

Make sure you indicate the bell in. The closer the better for the bearing IMO.
