I'm going to pick up a 74 duster this Saturday-- the owner states the wheels are locked in extreme left turn--- I figure the car has the interlock latch that locks the steering column,

sooo -- how to quickly remove this item-- no keys for the ride-- no worried about this option on the car. thanks Lawrence

you don't say, are you towing or driving? if you towing it, just drop the steering arm from the chuck. if your driving it you'll need to pull the top of the column apart, remove the lock rod and put it back together

good luck

With the pitman arm removed, that is absolutely nothing to keep the front wheels from flopping around like two trees in the wind.

OH I see you want to put the arm on there "someplace else" to straighten the wheels.

Doesn't the arm only fit every 90? degrees?

I am thinking Mr. Splat was implying to get the car on a trailer or rollback truck. I've done this a few times to winch a car onto a truck or trailer.

thanks going to pick up a field car, found it when helping on a 75 duster--- it has been growing for some 15 years!!

Splitting the pitman are from the center link is a heck of a lot easier than getting the pitman arm off the steering gear. There may be a nut there that requires a 1& 5/16 socket.
If you want / need steering control, you would need all the tools required to remove the lock from the column. That would be my choice. I can do sitting in the drivers seat a lot easier than I can do underneath the car.

guess it depends on what tools you want to grab on the way. 1 socket a breaker bar and a puller seems pretty easy to me
