I'm running a 273 Commando - Holley 600cfm, Lunati .515/.525 cam, port n polished stock heads, Edelbrock RPM intake, duals w/ h-pipe & 4.10 rear. I estimate 285hp - 300hp. Last year I accidentially turned in my MOPAR hipo distributor as a core for a stock distributor that I purchased. I put the wrong distributor in the box and was running late. I also. switched out the 'flame thrower' coil for a stock coil. Anyway, I put 500miles on this setup and I don't notce any power differences. She pulls strong and redlines @ 6000rpm. Was it a waste having the MOPAR distributor on the motor? Should I replace the stock dist. & coil? The reason for the swap out was actually a misdiagosis of a fuel delivery problem, bad fuel pump and needle & seat.

So now you see that the factory stuff wasn't all that bad after all. If you are gapping your plugs to OEM specs, the factory hardware should be reliable. In fact the Mopar setup was really good, easily as good as GM HEI, or Duraspark. Mallory and MSD replacement distributors are nice because they are more easily adjustable, and not worn out like 30+ year old factory pieces may be. Unless you are looking to blow some cash, I would suggest running what you have now for a while.

Buy good wires.

lol...Yea I guess I got caught up in the hype!....I didn't think a motor making 285 - 300hp needs a bunch of expensive components...by the way I'm running Accel 8.8mm wires.

Thx, ZooKypr

what kind of mopar dist. was it? the biggest thing about them is you can adjust the curve to what you motor likes.its possible that you got one that matched up pretty well with your combo. i would think your leaving a lot out there though with just a parts store dist. timing probably comes in kinda late. would probably see a difference with a set of light springs in it.

I guess for the sreet it's good stuff. But I think that when your at 7500 rpm with your big block roaring down the track you dont want a misfire,so you spend more.

Then there is the advantage of mutlispark which mopar ign does not have.Better cold starts and slightly better gas mileage are a reality with multispark, but it wont make more power.

I find that a good ign is more about reliability and getting the most spark to ignite huge intake charges, not making more power. You wanna make more power, well look at head work.

I stand corrected, it wasn't a high perf. distrib. It was the distributor from the Mopar electronic conversion kit which came with the orange box.

they still could have had adjustable advance plates and vac. advance. nice dist to tune with.
