If you have stock axles, a stock housing and snap-ring style green bearings you do not have to remove the thrust buttons.
If you must remove them for some reason, you may be able to pull them out with needlenose pliers. Usually the roll pin or rivet that holds them together is broken and they come out easy. If not, get an appropriate sized punch and drive out the roll pin. Then the buttons will come out, one from each side. Mancini shows a good picture of what they look like: Differential Pinion Thrust Spacer Kit
