A Briggs and Stratton with a disabled governor is an HP engine. Although not for long.
I disagree. My governor deleted rock mower has been kicking for 30 years. I am the govnr. Got a big throttle on that B&S They dont make em like they used too.

I think it comes down to the intent of the factory, /6 was the baseline so every engine offered above base with more power is technically a performance engine, people upgraded to say a 318 over /6 cause it gave extra power, does that make it a high performance engine, no. But clearly 340, six pack engines and hemi's were obviously factory offerings as performance engines and sold as such. Engines like the 440 could be both depending on the car, wouldn't say a 440 in a land yacht is necessary a high performance engine but in a Dart, Cuda etc.. It is.

Yeah but you got sense too. Us 13 year olds ridin down a major street in Macon at almost 100 on a go cart with an 8HP Briggs with a disabled governor didn't. lol

About tore my head off of with that 5 horse briggs in a go cart when the chain broke. Got not much sense.

What about the Little Red Express-fastest American automobile of 1978-79. Faster than the Corvette! Not a HP engine?

Definitely a HP engine.... AND.... trucks are hot rods too !!! Many versions throughout the years of them

And one that's a whole lot more likely to curl up on your lap than his previous two avatars.

the only one I'd allow to curl up in my lap... wink wink... Fast approaching 32 yrs with the love of my life :)

My wife would say, "Whose granddaughter is that, 'cause it sure isn't yours!"

'Course, she'd also be mad if the cat curled up in my lap instead of hers...

and the truth is....... I'm not a cat fan :D :D :D

My 2 cents...

so to the question....

the run of the mill engine is designed for reliability and economy.
the HP engine is designed for MORE!

Take a stock 2bbl and add a 4bbl, its an HP engine

Add a more free flowing exhaust, its MORE

Change out the 2bbl cam with a 4bbl cam, its MORE MORE

Increase the compression either via compressor or compression ratio and its MORE MORE MORE

Put a cool decal on the intake and its MORE MORE MORE MORE!!!!!!

Back in the day HP and torque were good, but with modern machining, metallurgy and 50+ years of learning they have been able to best themselves several times over, get better gas mileage and be more reliable.
Back in the day, my next-door neighbor came over and wanted to show me his added high performance parts he put on his Fairlane. He added a chrome air cleaner and chrome valve covers, then asked what else he could do to make the car faster?

In 1958, Ford introduced its FE big block, in 332 and 352 inch versions. The top of the line "police interceptor" 352 was rated at 300 horsepower. Hot Rod Magazine tested one and wondered what happened to the power it was supposed to have, as it felt slower than a 57 312. So they put a "300 hp" 352 on Edelbrock's engine dyno (not chassis dyno). Made 200 hp. Performance motor?
