Hi All, I'm picking up a bunch of parts this weekend for my project including the 904 in the pic below. I asked the seller what it was connected to but I havent heard back yet. I've researched how to identify them but its hard to tell from the only pic I was sent. Can someone help me out?

Yes, the pictured A904 Torqueflite is for a small block V-8. Slant six transmissions have the starter mount higher up on the left side. 904s were not used from the factory with big block V-8s. It could also be used with a 3.9L V-6.

There is a stamped number on the driver’s side of the case just above the oil pan that you can look up for the year and application.

Take his advice. Even though it's a small block application there are early, 'regular" and later model lock-up 904's that can complicate things if not used in the correct application.

Turn it over and shoe us the pan. Easiest way to tell the difference.

Judging from the picture where the servo is,,,it’s definitely a 904 .
Could be a 998 or 999,,,,lockup model ?,,,,perhaps,,,its still a 904 design.

Definitely not a 727 .

Be careful, poor photo. I cannot see enough of it and don't remember what Jeeps look like. Some of them have the starter on the pass side.

Also watch your *** on torqueflites in general. I cannot itemize them all, but they were made to fit some oddballs. AMC V8s and I guess their inline six, IHC V8's in the early 70's I guess, and I think they were used in some of the postal jeeps behind the 4 whanger that was used, maybe iron duke?

Not an issue at all,,,,,the old lockup models like this one are all hydraulic .
As long as it has the correct converter and it’s in good condition mechanical wise,,,it will work fine .

The picture tells another story:

The starter bulge on a A/LA series is below centerline while the B/RB starter bulge is almost even with it.
