Is woodgrain my only option for my dash

I have a 1972 dart swinger and i would really love it if I could find a black and chrome dash trim plates. does anyone have any ideas short of painting my own?

Sure, Avery brand adhesive backed vinyl sign material ( check ebay ) .Bright finish brushed aluminum, carbon fiber, endless options. A hobby knife kit from Harbor Freight tools, have fun.
 
I have done what he is saying with other models, especially trucks, and it works great! make sure you clean the surface very good, I use alcohol.
 
I've made appliques the way Redfish described. My technique is to make a template using a Manilla folder. I did all my adjustments on the template so that I did not waste a bunch of material. Once I had the template where it fit properly, I used it to mark the material for cut-out. Once cut out, I installed the same way I would a decal i.e. spritz using water containing a drop of liquid soap, position with small squeege and a burnishing pen.

Above is a material source. Below are photos of two clusters I did. Different material, same template. The set is in the Dart Custom, the engine turn is in the Demon.

yes sir, and not just the instrument panel.
It's on chrome, aluminum, and plastic, Over 5 years now and still looks good.

pauly, that cluster is awesome, not trying to hijack the thread, but give me the details on how you did that, what size and brand gauges are you using?

fastlane west dash insert, i wouldn't buy one again. it's super flimsy and wasn't a good representation of carbon fiber. so i cut some 1/8" lexan to fit the back of the insert and jb welded it in place, same treatment behind the wiper and light switch pods. it's alot stronger now.
the di-noc was a ***** to work with since the insert has so many corners, but i got it on the 2nd try. it looks and feels alot more like carbon fiber.
speedhut gauges... very nice products, prices, and people to work with. they're an excellent alternative to IMO overpriced Autometer. -pauly
 
WOW, Thanks for the heads-up on Fastlane West, I almost bought one of their dashes, good to know that they are not that good. I was trying to buy a non -cut dash in carbon fibre as I was going to do a digital dash and cut my own holes to fit,they wouldn't give me a deal on it and I said I was saving them some work but they still wanted $120.00 no matter what. I didn't go with the digital and I really like the speed hut guages. I am going to check it out. Your's looks super nice. Thanks again!
