Choke flap supposed to be fully open when warmed up, if not, you`ll get what your experiencing, that and not knowing really where your timings at.

Is it possible for these engines to jump timing? Had an older escort that acted like this and it had jumped timing. Of course the escort used a belt where this has a chain.

Yes, OEM had nylon sprocket teeth.

So, serious question. Do I need to stop trying to go forward, and pull the cover off to make sure all timing marks line up and then proceed from there?

Make sure you have fuel and spark. If so, you`ll have the excuse to source the proper cover.

Okay, update... got car running great, idle is a little high but I can work with that. Headed down the road for a test drive and all is going well then 45 minutes from the house she shuts off like someone just disconnected all power from her. No power at all, nothing works(lights, radio,flashers, nothing)$275 for the cheapest tow truck. Anyone have any ideas? The persons house it is at said I could leave it there for a couple of days and try to get it going before towing it

Does the ecu and vr have a GOOD ground? No crank at all? Check bulkhead connectors.

I can use a screwdriver and get it to turn over, but without power to the switch it won't start

No, it will turn over but not crank

Mine did similar thing a few years back. I believe it was wiring leading to key switch(67 barracuda). I ended up making an entire new dash harness.
I know not much help to you.
Got a voltmeter? Or test light with you?

I could bypass ignition switch if I knew where to connect constant power to keep it running

3/4 of a tank....that wouldn't explain not having power to anything electrical.

That was the same thing the officer asked when he pull in the driveway behind me. Said he wouldn't have caught up to me if I hadn't stopped.

I inherited a 1969 dodge charger from my grandfather. He bought it new, and had it worked on several times. I believe he said it was rebuilt twice. Last rebuild was because previous mechanic left shop rag in distributor hole when he installed the new distributor. Anyway, the car runs very rough. I can adjust the timing and get it to idle smoothly at 950 rpm, but when I reconnect vacuum advance it jumps to 2300. What am I doing wrong? (I'm just a farmhand with general knowledge of mechanics and keep it running smarts) My main love is the animals, but I don't want to throw away a good vehicle if I can fix it.

What part of Tn. are you in.
