Around here you have to be bear smart. Keep garbage in a cage, turn outside lights on and check before you walk out the door at night. Take a flashlight with you. They’re black bears so they scare easily. Not to be taken lightly thou. in 37 years I’ve Got warden’s to trap a few, scared a few off, shot a few as a last resort. They’re ok like having them around, they really only become a problem when a new neighbour moves in and needs to be taught about garbage control. That will do it !
We had a bear in town spotted all over town for a week, on the news a couple times, rarely we see them here in northeast Arkansas in populated towns. You have a good four legged family member there

Wow, yep, teaching new comers about trash and how to deal with them must be a problem, my first cousin shot a 510 lb black bear up in northwest Arkansas, he hauled it home in the back of a s10, his back was taller then the bed, biggest bear killed in Arkansas in 40 years, I helped dress him out.Around here you have to be bear smart. 4 strand Electric fencer does the trick, more for deer but it doesn’t discriminate.
