Before I try to break in the engine. The pre load is bugging me.

I got a 383" engine.
It´s been square decked, the pistons TDC is .020" down in the cylinder.
Got a .020" steel shim head gasket
915 heads that were milled flat, not sure how much as I bought them in this state.
It also got a hydralic purple 284/484 cam.
Now, I´m using stock pushrod, how likely is it that the lifter pre load is bad?
Do I always need to check the pre load? If so does any of you guys got a
link to "how to do this" ?

Many thanks in advance

check out comp cams site. they have pushrod checkers that are numbered so you dont need any other stuff like calipers or a mic. really easy to use.

Sounds like you need a pushrod length checker and possibly new length pushrods.

The cam should be on the base circle and rockers installed, valves fully closed to make the check with the adjustable length pushrod.

Depress the lifter .050 and you'll be good.
Thanks Rumble

Sorry if I´m slow on this,
Cam on base, closed valve and then set the adjustable pushrod to zero lash
between the cam and rocker!. Then add .050" to the push rod length?

Not answering your question but I had a 383 with that exact cam and it ran great. You'll love that cam!

Thanks mullinax.
Can`t wait to get the motor started, but I have to sure I´m doing it the right
way this time.

Made my own adjustable pushrod with the help of an old one I had in the garage.
Splitted the rod into two pieces and then threaded a metric 3 mm thread in the rod so it can be adjusted.

Anyway, found out I´m going to need another set of pushrods that measures 8.502". I´ve browsed summit racing online catalog and found a couple of sets.

Which set would you guys recommend? It`s a rather large difference in the prices.
Would it be safe to go with the cheapest or what do you think.

The cam needs to be in a position so the lifter is on the base circle. With the cam and lifter installed, as well as the rocker gear, place the adjustable pushrod inbetween the lifter and rocker and adjust the pushrod to become longer until the lifter is depressed .050.

That would be the new length you need.

On the summit pushrods, pay attention to material used and then thickness. Thicker is not an automatic better.
