Lifters in a LA 360

Would a lifter going bad cause a soft popping sound through the exhaust?
I questioned it on my rebuild but reinstalled anyway not knowing for sure. Is it a bad idea to replace lifters without replacing cam? It is a .509 cam and I have edebrock heads with proform adjustable rockers if you were wondering.

Check your rocker adjustment. One out of adjustment could be a cause
of it.
