i was wondering if its better to go with a roller over a flat tappet on a 400hp 318 build. id use the stock 5.2l magnum roller rockers from the dealer. will the lifters be able to take a thumpr cam?

As long as you have a magnum block or one of the late LA blocks that came with roller lifters you will be OK. Those lifters cab't be used in LA blocks because there is no provisions for attaching the spider that hols those lifters in place.

Just make sure that the cam you are using was MADE for roller lifters. You can't use rollers on a flat tappet cam.

is the retainer plate held down with a bolt? i got machine experience and a lot of connections, so i figured i can adept it to the early LA block

The lifter bores are taller to provide addtional support and there are bosses cast into the valley that are drilled and tapped for the spider. If you have an LA block you are going to have to get retro fit roller lifters that have a link that ties them together in pairs for an LA block.

If you have a non roller block, why not pick up a roller 318 or 360 block from a dippy or a van - lots cheaper to go that route if you are determined to use a roller cam. That is - if your present motor needs to be rebuilt. Take a look at the costs of the retrofit tappets, then look into the cost of the already fitted later model lifter set up. The lifter set up is the key. Good luck.

When did the factory switch to the roller lifters? Is there an easy way to tell from the outside, like a casting #, etc?
