How do you get the knob off the light switch with out breaking it?

reach under the dash and after pulling it out as far as it comes for lights to come on _ PUSH the button on the bottom of the switch

While holding medium pressure on the button located on the switch you may have to slide the knob and shaft in and out slowly while also rotating it. Sounds dirty but it works . ..

Depending on the build, that stem release button may be located on the right side of the switch rather than the bottom. In either case, If you'll remove the 1 screw that holds the fuse box in its clip, The fuse box will move a little. Thus you'll have more space for hand/button pushing.
And by the way, no need to push the button when installing the stem. Its tapered point guides it in.
