Living with 3.91's

I'd be more worried about the roo's then the mileage out there. Looks like a nice stretch of road, is that out near Lake Grace?
 
Gear vendor units are nice, but hideously expensive. The 518 doesn't require NEARLY the fabrication people think, so to me it's the only way to go if you want that overdrive gear in an automatic.

Hey Goody: From now on you are not allowed ot reference your Dad's cuda...ever. It makes us jealous. His engine costs more than I will have in my entire car when I'm finished. :wack: :toothy8:

i need to look into that a little more. i hear its just slight trimming to get it in there. plus its a better od ratio then the gv.

haha, hey well when i look at my car and go 'eh not too bad, its lookin pretty good'...next bay over in the garage is his car...i then go back to my corner...lol :disgust:
 
I personall would like to get a 4:88 setup. I have 4:30's right now and figuring that the motor will probably turn in the 7K area I figure 4:88's would be a good compromise.
 
Well, thanks for all the perspectives guys. No definitive outcome so i guess i'll fit them and see.
I live in a remote part of the UK which means travelling a 500 mile around trip for the annual Mopar Nats.That aside, i really just use the car for local fun, shows and the occassional drag race.
Given the escalating rise in fuel prices, I might as well stop compromising and get the car into the 13's and enjoy it.
One of these days the government is going to make these cars too unpleasant to own

Apart from country Fuel consumption I don't have a problem with 3.9's

ok, ok
i recently had 4.30's and didn't like getting on interstate for anything more that an exit or two. (26.5 tire). i switched to 3.23 and it's a little sluggish,
but tolerable. a 3.91 can be "stiffened up" with a short tire and you can get a little break for the highway using a tall tire (28 or so), making it a good decision
 
Does anyone know who makes a 3.73 rear gear for an 489 case? they seem to be an ultra rare ratio

I don't "often" take the car out on the freeways for any lengthly drives or racing for that matter.... however, I sure love the 3.91s for excellent "quick" 1/2 blocks then shutter down some..... just to say....up yours tang!! :thebirdm:

I hit 120 mph today in a short run with my 3.91 gears and 27" tall tires--seem to still want to keep pulling but was running out of breath...besides I didn't want to start a post showing my 318 block with a big hole in the side from a thrown rod :-D
 
To tell you the truth, I kind of wish I got 4.10 gears but before I had 360 heads on it, 3.91's were just right for it.

Man those 340's must have been great to take up to 7000 rpms once the motor was blue printed.
 
I run 3.91`s in my Barracuda with a 5spd.. 1st gear is like having a 4.23 rear and in 5th gear I can cruise the interstate at 70 mph and 2200 rpm. The transmission is where it`s at.

Hello Tracy, I used the Tremec TKO 600 with a Lakewood bellhousing. Keisler supplied the trans, clutch/pressure plate, and driveshaft as a kit and machined the bellhousing. As far as installation, there was of course the tunnel to be cut out and modified ,a minor amount of grinding on the rear crossmember, and a modification on the shifter since it sits back about three inches. I bought their hydraulic throw out bearing too since I have a big block with chassis headers. You could forego the hyd. clutch with a smallblock. The 5 spd. is truly the single, most dramatic improvement /modification I`ve ever made to my car and I can`t say enough good about it.
