Hey guys, can any one tell me where I can find the head identification numbers for the heads that are on my 360. I just pulled it out of an 86 w250 4x4. the block has 4179930-360-2 on it. I pulled the valve covers off, the only numbers I could see was 274. I did see the numbers 00599 9293 1 242 stamped just below the left head. I really do not want to take the head off. thanks any info will help.

there should be casting numbers ,they are often hard to see as the rocker assembly
covers them you may need a flashlight. There is also letter codes located on the outside of the heads by the spark plug holes a U or J or if your lucky an X
x heads will have the big valves 2.02 and some J heads 2.02 valves I even have
a set of 360 U heads that have 2.02 valves. You for sure do not have to remove the heads to I.D. them. When you find the numbers post them and some one will
let you know what you have . Cheers.

73dodgearcher,
Please pardon my intrusion on your thread but I also have been trying to figure out the same question but for a 318? Also what is a quick way to know what valves aare installed in a head?

There are basiclly 2 different cylinder heads that have been used on production "A"
engines from 1964-1990. A small port 273/318 head and a big port 340/360 head.
There have been only 3 different valve configurations for these. 273/318 with 1.78"
intake and 1.50" exhaust, one for the 1968-1971 340 heads with the 2.02" intake
and a 1.60" exhaust these size valves are also found in 360 j heads and the other
configuration is 1972-1973 340/360 heads and some 318 high proformance heads with
1.88" intakes and 1.60" exhaust. most of these can be I.D. by the casting numbers and the letter codes on the outside of the heads. If you have a stock 318 with original heads on it they will be the small port heads with the 1.78" intakes and the 1.50" exhaust valves. I hope this helps . Cheers.

ok guys, i found it. I had to take off my intake manifold and turn the engine on my stand, and I found the casting numbers underneath the head. the numbers are 4343475-A. can any one tell me the specs for these heads. Im guesing its 1.88 int. 1.60 exh. and a combustion chamber of 70 +/- 2 which would put my cr at 8.0 to 1?

I am going to use this motor and heads the way they are. I will also be puting on a performer intake and edelbrock 600cfm carb. could I get some opinions on a cam upgrade that would not require a valve spring change.

I will be putting a paxton supercharger on it in about 8 months. which cam should I go with. thanks

I could not find any casting numbers on my heads for this motor, except for when I looked under the heads.

the 915 J heads that are on my drag car were easy to see.

sounds good to me

There's something Wheels missed. There are casting numbers under the head in the middle of it by the heat cross over is. You need not remove the head. Just use a mirror to look under the head. There are the casting numbers you want. Not the ones up top on the runners in e tween the springs.

FWIW

Only the early year heads have letters cast into them.

That year 360 (86) has 1.88/1.60 valves and will flow around 200cfm.

The 318 always has 1.78/1.50 valves unless it was factory Equiped with a 4bbl. If so Equiped, it has 360 heads & the same size valves as above.

Contact 1wild and crazy for more info and see his sticky for what can be done.

Ok I looked at my heads today and I have J cast on one and an A cast on the other I have not gone and looked for the other numbers that have been talked about. I will do that tomorrow. What if anything does the A & J mean and does it matter if they are not the saame?
