Nostalgia Top Fuel driver John Shoemaker from Sacramento was pronounced dead Saturday afternoon after being airlifted to Kern Medical Center following an accident during qualifying at the 50th March Meet at Auto Club Famoso Raceway.

I found a report somewhere that said that people in the stands seem him slumped over the steering wheel at the 1000' mark. If that is the case then that would explain why he was at full throttle and the chute didnt deploy....

I would bet that he died in the saddle. To think hopefully with a smile, straight run and under power. What a way to go.

RIP John. Man I hate to hear this. I feel bad for his wife who was at the starting line watching it all unfold. My prayers go out to the Shoemaker family.
