Magnum Motor Timing Cover

I have had a leak between the 2 lower water pump bolts that was driving me nuts. As soon as it warmed up; it leaked.
I replaced the gasket 2 times and looked for cracks on the pump itself etc.; no change.

I pulled off the pump and saw this crack on the cover. Could it have been initially unseen to the eye? I swear I did not see it the first time. The crack doesn't go to the gasket surface area from what I can tell.

Nevertheless, I am putting on another cover. Any ideas on what could have casued this? Overtighening?

Casting flaw,my guess.

if it is cracked all the way through right there you have coolant in your oil

No coolant in the oil. I am good there. This was a new Magnum crate motor and I maybe put 50 mi on it since it was installed.
